In a move reflecting Egypt’s growing regional role in energy markets, Gas Regulatory Authority, Egypt was elected back December 2024 to chair the Gas Working Group of the Association of Mediterranean Energy Regulators MEDREG – Mediterranean Energy Regulators , which brings together energy regulatory authorities from across the Mediterranean region, with Türkiye and Spain elected as Vice-Chairs.

This achievement comes with the support of Eng. Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and Chairman of GASREG’s Board of Directors, reflecting his belief in GASREG’s role in developing Egypt’s natural gas market and strengthening its regional position. It also aligns with the Ministry’s vision of promoting cooperation and dialogue with stakeholders and neighboring countries.

Egypt continues heading MEDREG’s Gas Working Group, where global and regional energy markets undergo rapid transformations, with increasing emphasis on security of supply, sustainable energy sources, and stronger integration among regional markets.

The Gas Working Group is one of MEDREG’s key working groups, supporting regulatory frameworks and policies that promote cooperation and integration among gas markets across the Mediterranean, while also supporting competitiveness, sustainability, and security of supply.

The Group’s responsibilities include coordinating regulatory policies among member countries, analyzing regional gas market developments, exchanging expertise and best practices, addressing market challenges, and supporting infrastructure development to enhance energy security and sustainability.

GASREG’s chairmanship strengthens Egypt’s role in regional dialogue on gas and energy market regulation. It also provides an opportunity to share Egyptian regulatory expertise while benefiting from regional and international experiences, supporting regulatory practices in Egypt in line with international best standards.
