Toward a More Flexible Gas Market: GASREG Advances Capacity Management Through Dynamic, Market-Responsive Planning

As part of the Gas Regulatory Authority’s (GASREG) efforts to develop the capacity management framework and enhance the efficiency of planning for natural gas network requirements, GASREG’s Technical Department held a meeting with the Egyptian Natural Gas Company (GASCO) to review and assess existing capacity plans and discuss ways to further develop them in line with ongoing changes in the gas market.

The meeting addressed the development of capacity plans to support proactive planning for network requirements, optimize the utilization of existing infrastructure, and enhance the system’s ability to respond effectively to changes in supply and demand, thereby achieving greater efficiency and flexibility in capacity management.

The discussions also focused on the importance of moving from conventional static capacity planning toward a more dynamic and flexible model capable of better responding to anticipated market developments and the evolving needs of network users. Such an approach would support more accurate decision-making in the management and allocation of available capacities.

The meeting emphasized the importance of strengthening integration and cooperation between GASREG, the network operator, and various market participants, as well as promoting the exchange of data and technical expertise. These efforts aim to establish a more accurate and flexible capacity planning methodology based on clear data and indicators that reflect the actual and anticipated needs of the market.

In this context, the participants agreed to continue coordination and hold subsequent meetings with relevant authorities and market stakeholders to further the technical discussions and review the data and assumptions required for developing the capacity plans. This will support more efficient network operations and enhance its ability to respond to developments in the gas market.

This step forms part of GASREG’s broader efforts to develop market regulatory tools and mechanisms in line with the rapidly evolving energy sector, enhance the efficient utilization of infrastructure, and support the development of a more flexible gas market capable of responding effectively to the needs of all stakeholders.
